Tottenham allowed 6.000 fans to take part in a four-hour familiarisation day ahead of two test events at the ground. The stadium with a capacity of 62.062 should be ready for the Premier League game against Newcastle on February 2 following months of delay.

Supporters were allowed to sit at the single-tiered 17.500 South Stand. Food and drink outlets within The Market Place were also open, which included the longest bar in Europe at 65 meters. Beer will start from £4 a pint. Fish and chips costs £8.95 and pies £3.50.

There have been several delays to the opening of the stadium on the site of the old White Hart Lane. And on Wednesday Tottenham announced their Premier League game against Manchester United on January 13 would be another held at Wembley, where they have been playing home fixtures since leaving their old ground at the end of the 2016-17 season.

The club also said in that statement they were expecting an update from contractors in the week commencing January 7. “The past few months have been spent rectifying issues with the critical safety systems”, Tottenham said in Wednesday’s update for fans on their official website.

“We are pleased to report that progress has been steady and we are now into the integrated testing and commissioning phases that take place ahead of the application for a stadium safety certificate”.

Spurs are expected to play in their new ground this season. The club are hopeful of opening the gates when they host Newcastle in Premier League, and Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in February 2019.
